glassWORLDWIDE (September 2009)

Results from Dismatec’s Furnace Refractory Structure Audit Service have identified potential problem areas, in addition to those commonly known.

Using these results Mr. Michael Horsfield, Managing Director of Dismatec Limited has written a paper titled; “Internal wear areas in a furnace”.

The paper has been published in the magazine glassWORLDWIDE, Sept/Oct 2009 issue.

DISMATEC offer a service to assist Extended Furnace Campaign Life (March 2009)

With the present World financial status, companies have had to address and are constantly considering their Business Strategy.

Because of this an extension to the Furnace Design Campaign Life is seriously being considered to assist financial planning and capital budgeting.
It has been normal to extend the Furnace Design Campaign Life by 10-15%, however, in these changing times more is being asked of the Furnace Refractory Structure and the life of the furnace is required to be extended well beyond normal limits and the unknown extremes of the refractory products.

Although an extension to Furnace Campaign Life helps financial planning considerably it also places the refractory structures into the category of high risk towards added internal wear and possible refractory structure failure.

DISMATEC have considered this situation and offer the full service of Furnace Refractory Structure Audits including for Visual, Thermography and Endoscopic together with the ability to fully assess results utilising their comprehensive knowledge and experience and give realistic and meaningful recommendations.
This service helps to identify potential problems at an early stage, preventing unexpected and sudden refractory structure failure and allow time for planning a maintenance programme.
We believe that this is a pro-active service moving the mode of direction away from a “fire-fighting” situation.

From the recommendations made DISMATEC offer a full maintenance service to repair refractory structures including for materials supply, site management, supervision and labour.

This ensures that any recommendations made in reports are fully understood and the required quality of work is achieved.

DISMATEC also recognise that electrical and mechanical systems are also affected by the extension to Furnace Campaign Life and have extended their audit and maintenance service to include for the inspection of these systems.
This service can be adapted to all plant systems that are thought to be a concern.

Published Papers (Febuary 2009)

After the first set of published papers, Dismatec have been contacted by two major glass industry magazines, glassWORLWIDE and Glass International, to provide papers for publication on the magazines’ related themes in selected issues.

The invitation was accepted and papers were written by Dismatecs’ Managing Director, Mr. Michael Horsfield on the subjects of;

Partial rebuild of a glass melting furnace for Glass International

The factors on decision making and the process chain requirements for a partial rebuild are reflected in this paper.

Is refractory inspection necessary prior to delivery? for glassWORLWIDE

The pre-delivery requirements for the inspection of purchased refractories for a glass melting furnace construction project are considered in this paper.

Hazardous Refractory Waste Materials are No - Hazard for the Customer (Febuary 2009)

Dismatec have recently completed a contract including for the disposal of hazardous refractory waste materials from a glass melting furnace, for a major UK Customer.

Working to current regulations and legislation the materials were removed from site meeting all criteria and requirements of the customers’ project programme.

After the contract was awarded Dismatec controlled all aspects for the waste disposal, leaving the customer to concentrate on their core activity of a new furnace construction project.

Dismatec are able to offer the customer a complete refractory waste disposal service including for hazardous and non-hazardous materials together with the service of refractory structure dismantling.

Both services together ensure that waste materials are segregated as required and contamination of materials is not created, therefore, creating no unexpected costs to the customer.

The past several months have been a “publishing” time for Dismatec’s Managing Director, Michael Horsfield.

The magazine ‘glassWORLDWIDE’ has been host to two technical papers, one on the subject of “the furnace refractory structure visual audit”, published in the March/April 2008 edition, and a second on the subject of “furnace refractory structure hot repair”, published in the July/August 2008 edition.

A third paper has been written on the subject of ‘Lubisol silica crown insulation’ and presented at the Society of Glass Technology’s Furnace Solutions 3 Seminar at British Ceram, UK on 5th June 2008.
